Apple Extends EU-Driven iPadOS Changes to Enhance Competition and User Choice

In compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act, Apple announced significant updates to its iPad ecosystem, mirroring earlier changes made for iPhone users. As of this fall, iPadOS will adopt new guidelines set by the European Commission, offering developers the option to utilize Alternative Business Terms for Apps within the EU. This update will introduce alternative app marketplaces, allow for non-WebKit based browsers, and enable users to select their preferred default search engine and expand contactless payment methods beyond Apple Wallet. These changes, designed to prevent monopoly abuses, also include a Core Technology Fee for app developers, applicable after the first million installs. This policy aligns installations across both iPhone and iPad, counting them as a single install to maintain threshold limits. This move could potentially transform app distribution and user experience on iPads in Europe.
